This year is the tenth year of the people’s army’s struggle to strengthen the army in the new era. In this decade, the people’s army has made great strides on the road of strengthening the army with China characteristics, during which a number of grassroots officers and men have emerged who are loyal to their mission and are proficient in martial arts. In the past ten years, Ying Xu has changed from a fighter pilot to a carrier-based fighter of Liaoning ship, and then to a vice captain of Shandong ship, a domestic aircraft carrier. His growth path resonates with the pulse of the motherland’s development and great military achievements. He has challenged himself again and again and leapt high, only to better protect the sea and air of Wan Li, the motherland.

Ying Xu, Deputy Captain of Shandong Ship:I am Ying Xu, the vice captain of Shandong Ship. For me, the past ten years have been the most important in my military career. In 2012, with the opportunity of the navy to develop the aircraft carrier business, I started a brand-new flying career, transforming from an air force fighter pilot to a carrier-based fighter pilot.

In the past ten years, I have participated in and witnessed every historical moment of the dual aircraft carriers from listing to training to galloping across the ocean. I am fortunate to be able to associate my youth and blood with the naval cause of the motherland, and I have also gained many unforgettable moments in my military life.
The carrier-based aircraft industry started from scratch, and there is no ready-made experience to learn from, so we must explore everything from scratch.

Carrier-based aircraft landing is called "dancing on the tip of a knife" because there are great risks in landing flight. Therefore, in the process of training, I am faced with both the pressure of learning new technologies and the psychological pressure from the new environment.

In the most difficult time, we gather wisdom to tackle key problems and train hard. One year later, we successfully obtained the qualification certification of boarding the ship in the daytime, became a real carrier-based pilot, and opened a new chapter in the development of the aircraft carrier business.
In 2016, we fired live ammunition. Faced with the urgent situation that the carrier-based aircraft has formed the actual combat capability, as the head of the team, I boldly proposed to launch anti-ship missiles by low-altitude penetration according to the requirements of actual combat. This idea was opposed by many people, thinking that the risk was too high, and it was safer to adopt the hollow launch method, but I resisted the pressure and personally carried out this task.
After careful preparation and targeted training, I successfully completed the task, created a precedent for the navy to use this type of weapon, and made another solid step in the construction of aircraft carrier formation combat effectiveness.

In 2017, I once again faced an arduous challenge — — Landing at night. In this process, I felt the greatest pressure and even fear since I was engaged in flying. Landing at night was called "the worst invention ever" by the pilot. Usually, when flying during the day, the air crew preparation room is usually full of laughter and relaxation, but before flying at night, everyone in the preparation room is preoccupied and frowning. When we leave the brightly lit airport and plunge into the vast night, flying at a very low altitude and low speed on the sea, it is easy to have flight illusion and lead to control errors, which will lead to serious consequences. In those days, every time I called my parents and family, I didn’t want to hang up when I got through, for fear that this would be the last time. Under this heavy pressure, we didn’t flinch, and faced the difficulties. As the head of the team, I was the first to carry out the night landing mission again.


When the carrier-based aircraft No.106 landed on the deck of the Liaoning ship in the boundless darkness, I got off the plane and was picked up by the head of the army, because it marked that the carrier-based aviation of the China Navy could fight all day.

In 2018, I was fortunate enough to participate in the South China Sea military parade. As the captain of the mission, I flew the J -15 plane from the Liaoning ship, and formed a four-plane formation with my comrades in the air, which was reviewed with honor. When I was flying in the air, I looked down at the sea and saw all the ships and submarines participating in the military parade lined up on the sea. The torrent was rolling and the ship array was towering. When the navy was founded, it was still a pitifully small "inland river fleet". After generations of bloody struggles, it has developed into a powerful modern navy that can effectively defend national sovereignty, security and development interests.

A few years ago, the navy set up a pilot captain class to meet the needs of aircraft carrier construction and development. When this opportunity came to me, it was easier to stay in the original army and continue to fly in my old line, or to be a "primary school student" to learn ships. I chose the latter without hesitation, transforming to challenge a new field and start a new life.
In June, 2021, I took the post of vice captain of Shandong Ship. As a pilot captain, I caught up with the new era of strengthening the army and rejuvenating the army. I was also fortunate to witness and participate in the development of China naval aircraft carrier.

All our naval officers and men are resonating with the development pulse of a strong army at the same frequency. There is still a long way to go before Chinese aircraft carrier formation capability can be generated. We must make greater contributions to building a world-class army in the spirit of time and tide wait for no man, repay the great stage given to us by the motherland, and protect the sea and air of Wan Li.
